How to Find The Best Crib Mattress

As you know  a mattress does not come with the crib and must be purchased seperately. Well shopping for a crib mattress is not as easy as I thought it would be. There are a lot of choices out there.

In all my research it seems an innerspring mattress is generally more durable than a foam mattress. And never, never use an air mattress for a baby's crib..this can be extremely dangerous for the infant if the mattress begins to lose air and may potentially cause a suffocation problem.

Most of the consumer reports recommend innerspring mattress with anywhere from 135 to 150 coils and about a 15 gauge wire for the coils, however the mattresses that I researched all started with 220 coils.

So what exactly do I need to look for. Here are a few points that I listed:
is it the right size for your crib
                        is it firm enough
is the covering sturdy and waterproof
is there venting along the sides
is it hypoallergenic or has a hypoallergenic layer
                        is it certified
                        how much does it cost
Consider comfort, durability and then cost in that order. I mean most babies sleep in their crib the first three years of life.

Try to select a crib mattress that senses your baby's movements and it responds with increasing support and correct support.

It should have waterproof surface and binding for easy cleaning. Keep in mind you will need to lift and manipulate the mattress when you change the sheets so you don't want anything to heavy.

Your mattress should meet or exceed the current phthalates standards set forth by the CPSC and meet federal flammability standard 16 CFR 1633

I prefer to buy made in the USA and most of the ones I researched are made in the USA.

Check to see if your mattress has a lifetime warranty or at the very least most come with a 20 year warranty which should definitely see your baby through the crib and toddler years.

Graco Shelby Crib Review

The Graco Shelby 4 in 1 Convertible Crib Review

So why all this interest in cribs...well I'm going to be a grandma again..and since the last grand baby is already 5 years old..we are kinda starting from scratch here...and boy have they made a lot of changes in those few years..

Isn't this the prettiest crib...

For example and this was a biggie for me...cribs no longer have drop sides..huh! well all three of my girls had double drop side cribs...I guess now it's a big safety issue..luckily I never had any issues with that type of crib...so this Graco Shelby is a classic baby crib which means it has stationary side rails..
so the 3 position adjustable mattress spring will be nice for reaching into the crib..It allows the mattress to be higher in the crib so you can gently lay down a sleeping newborn, then lowered for babies who can pull themselves up. At least two mattress heights is nice, three is even better and the wire springs tend to be the sturdiest choice..

and because this is an island crib and classic crib you have easy access to baby from all angles. The
 Graco Shelby Crib
will work just as well positioned in the middle of the room as it would placed at the foot of your bed or a wall..

One of the features I really like about this crib is it is slightly smaller than most other cribs which is great for apartment living or just a smaller nursery room..

The sleigh bed style certainly places this crib in with an classic American favorite..although I just read it dates back to the Roman Empire..I don't know about you but I just love this style of bed frame..

Oh and one of the other great features of this type of convertible crib is it's longevity..the ability to grow with your baby..this crib converts to a toddler bed (no guard rail needed for conversion), a daybed and full-size headboard (bed frame and mattress not included) as baby grow from infancy to the teen years..

Safety certified is something you want to look for also..this crib is certified safe by the following: JPMA(juvenile products manufacturers association), ASTM(american society for testing and materials) and CPSC(consumer product safety council) which I guess are the big three..

This Graco Shelby Classic Crib
comes with five-year limited warranty against manufacturer's defects..

It's ranked on the amazon best seller list and has an average customer review 4.5 out of 5 stars but you don't have to take my word for it you can read for yourself here:Graco Shelby Classic 4 in 1 Convertible Crib

I'm so excited we're gonna have a new baby..I still have a long way to go since we just found out..waiting is the hardest part..but on the other hand I have a lot of time for shopping...so I'll be sharing a lot of bargains with you along the way..Off to look for some baby animal bedding..and check out some
crib mattresses..

Have a great day!...

No Room for A Mudroom!

It's that time of the year again and the kid's jackets and mud shoes are all over the house
again...I don't have a place to have a designated mudroom
so I have been trying to find ideas for what you would call
mudroom area...some sort of organized look good place where all this
winter stuff can go and still be within easy reach of the door
I found a couple of neat ideas and they don't look too complicated
or expensive...now where this area is located will determine what type of storage you may want to use...for example...by the back door, where most of my family comes and goes...a simple approach would work: storage bins and modular shelving right out of the box will do
If it's off the kitchen...and you have a handyman around..consider using some cabinets and counter tops attached to the walls for storage
this will make the area look like part of the kitchen
Inside the front door you may want to opt for something a little
more formal like a purchased hall tree or maybe a beautiful armoire
Here are some pictures I found of the ones I liked and that looked easy, functional and hopefully won't break the budget...

Well I'm off to find my handyman and see if I can get a little help
with my mudroom area...
Talk to you later..
